I took the anchor points from the letter a and moved them forward and backward along a z-axis, then connected them. This means you can only see the letter if you look at it in a certain way.


I think this would work out easier in a physical model, as the perspective in SketchUp warps the letter a bit. I added spheres to represent planets or stars or other astronomical bodies. Not done adding them all in yet, and I'm not sure if I want to go in that direction. But I think if I could figure out a way to make a physical model of this, it would be pretty cool.
