I can't believe our show is in 3 days?! A lot of hours have been put in over the past few months culminating in one thesis show, for one night: mind-blowing. So In chronological order, here are some snapshots I took while installing my show Limited Exposure

One thing I really want to do more of with my show is add more design elements. It has been interesting experimenting with different mediums, but I really want to begin rein it in as the show approaches. So over break I brainstormed ideas, and these are the beginning of them. They are in chronological order to show my thought progression

I've also been reconsidering the name of my individual senior show, and would love some input. Up until this point I have been calling it "Aesthetics is key" because I am using the aesthetics of these animals to convince them that there is nothing to fear. The new name I am considering is "Limited Exposure" which is talking about my use of exposure therapy to educate the viewer and also the lack of real contact the most people have with these animals. Thoughts?

3D scale update

After fighting very hard with the 3D scale idea, I just don't think this combination of mediums will work for me. The plastic of the bubble wrap is refusing to adhere to the styrofoam; even using special glue. So I decided to quit that particular idea before i'm in too deep. It was better in theory

On to (very literally) bigger and better things. I have begun the long shed-like scale wrap that was discussed in class. Its total length will be around 7ft (I believe). I have completed about a foot and a half at the moment.  I also plan to do the paintings using an acrylic brayer and bubble wrap.

Wear and tear update

So I left my piece that I made last week hanging exactly where I make it, to see how it would fare. I think it's safe to say it didn't fare extremely well for only 7 days.

With that I began tests with Acrylic Medium in the hopes that when it dries it will retain it's shape. I also attempted to create a duo-toned piece, both of these attempts didn't go extremely well in my opinion. The Acrylic Medium was very thick and was challenging to suck into the needle. I also did not achieve the look I wanted at all with the colors. I am interested to see how it dries and if I like it more than the water test. I am trying to think of other mediums to test that may work better. Any suggestions are appreciated.

The needles are IN! Let the Experiments commence

And so, as I just mentioned, the needles I have been waiting (FAR too long) for have arrived, and tonight was my first crack with them. For this I used just regular cheap Dollar Store bubble wrap, Vet med hypodermic needles and airbrush paint diluted in water. From this I learned a couple of things and I have questions I hope to answer.

What I Learned:
- This process is rather time consuming. It is difficult to only pierce the bubble portion and not the backing of the wrap. Doing so requires slow motions and a steady hand.
- For the more finished products it is necessary to get wrap with NO perforations as the bubbles around the perforations are deflated and won't hold liquid.

New questions I have:
- Will the mixture of paint and water begin to separate as it sits for any length of time?
- If so what new dye can I use (maybe food coloring)?
- Is there a way to seal the very small incisions once open?
- What would be the best method of transportation of the final pieces? Or would these have to be made on site?
-I would love to incorporate color gradations into the final piece, is this a feasible idea?
